2008 BioMedRap Symposium a SUCCESS!

BioMedRapper Heads to Switzerland!

In March 2008, Kirsten Kepple participated in a student poster competition at the 2008 Annual Meeting of The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society in New Orleans, LA. Her poster, entitled Neuronal Growth on Carbon Nanotubes, won 1st place in the Biomaterials division and 3rd best in show. As a result, she was awarded an all expenses paid trip to Lausanne, Switzerland to present her research (abstract below) at the 2008 Junior-Euromat conference. Congrats Kirsten!!!

Abstract:

This undergraduate poster, submitted to the Nanostructured materials division of the 2008 Junior Euromat Conference, will discuss experiments with nanoelectrode arrays. Microelectrode arrays, interfaces that connect neurons and electrical devices, could hold the potential to reconnect severed neural pathways or at least help to interpret neural signals. In recent research performed by others, the creation of these devices using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has produced great interest due to their many unique properties. In this experiment we show through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence imaging that PC-12 cells will attach to CNT substrates created via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on a silicon wafer. Furthermore, we discuss cell attachment and growth under carbon nanotube functionalization with laminin-1 and poly-L-lysine.

Team Building Exercises for BioMed 08!!

A VERY Trusting Adam Canver falls into the waiting arms of his fellow BioMed Rappers

Teamwork and Smiles!!
